Compare YAML files

Compare two YAML files locally, inspect changed values and their source, and keep originals intact. Add a common original only for an optional three-way merge.

Choose two versions to review changed values and exact source excerpts. A common original is optional for merging.

1. Choose two YAML files

Local processing · .yaml or .yml · up to 25 MiB per input. Conversion and comparison have additional safety limits.

  1. Review differencesInspect changed values and their source. A merge original is optional.
  2. Keep originals intactOnly an explicit reviewed merge changes your open source; Undo remains available.

Two inputs, one review

Your current file stays open as the source. The other version loads into Compare and merge. No second upload is needed.

Keep your source

Comparison does not change either input. A reviewed merge is a separate action with normal Undo.

Clear limits

Inputs are limited to 25 MiB each. Structure, alias expansion, exact numeric representation and task-specific safety limits also apply. No unlimited-file or universal conversion promise.

Compare changes, then choose whether to merge

Value changes are shown with their parsed paths and original source excerpts. Mapping order and comments are not the same as authored value changes. Choose a common original only when both versions evolved from that file; then review every conflict before applying a merge.

Use the YAML editor to inspect and edit configuration, the formatter and validator for syntax work, or convert supported YAML to JSON. See Privacy for local storage and optional assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need three YAML files to compare?

No. Choose your current file and the other version. The editor opens both inputs in Compare and merge without another upload. Only a three-way merge needs the separate optional common original.

What does the comparison consider?

The existing source-aware comparison checks parsed paths, scalar values, types, tags and anchor/reference identity. Pure comment or formatting differences may not appear as value changes. It is not a universal YAML equivalence test. Review source excerpts and the current YAML version settings.

Will comparison change my current YAML?

No. Two-file comparison is read-only. With an optional common original, resolve every merge conflict and choose Apply reviewed merge to change the open source. Undo restores the prior source; downloads remain separate.

How large can a comparison be?

Each input can be up to 25 MiB, but semantic review has smaller structure limits: up to 9,000 nodes and depth 190 per document, plus the existing outline safety bound. Invalid YAML, unresolved references or unsupported mapping keys are refused. File admission does not guarantee a large comparison will complete.

Does this task upload my YAML?

Conversion and comparison run locally without an account. Optional Assistance is separate and sends only the goal and selected context you explicitly include. Ordinary page requests still reach the host. See Privacy for storage and processing details.

What happens when I return or refresh?

Back to website and Resume keep this editor open in the same tab. Refresh opens the original inputs; matching source recovery copies require explicit review and Restore. Browser storage can fail or expire. Download important work separately.
